Job Description:

The Learning Specialist is responsible for providing a broad range of services in support of students enrolled in the privately grant funded program.  This position ensures student success by providing academic advising, classroom facilitation and retention strategies for the students in the program.  CORI check will be required upon hiring.

DUTIES:

  1. Provides academic, career and retention counseling to individuals and groups of students in the program.
  2. Develops and facilitates ongoing support groups for program students; maintains a network of community resources and makes referrals when necessary.
  3. Develops, facilitates and delivers classroom instruction on various topics such as program orientation, time management, study strategies, goal setting, learning styles, career planning and communication skills.
  4. Establishes confidential records and contributes to program data and recordkeeping system.
  5. Plans and facilitates group activities for students.
  6. Establishes and maintains close working relationships with public school personnel, college personnel, and parents of participants.
  7. Participates in all other operational aspects of the project, including program planning and development.
  8. Acts as spokesperson for the Gateway to College Program and assists in activities to expand community support for the program.
  9. Assists in marketing the program and links with media for press coverage and public announcements.
  10. Works flexible hours to include some weekends and evenings.
  11. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Master's degree in Education, Psychology, Social Science, Counseling, or related field; minimum of three years experience working in an educational or social service environment with youth from at-risk and culturally diverse populations; knowledge of high school and college curricula; minimum of one year experience in academic advising; minimum of two years alternative education or high school or college teaching experience; knowledge of community resources; strong written and interpersonal communication skills; ability to work independently and as a team member; proficiency in MS Office, Internet and Excel; ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff and student body.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  Bilingual (English/Spanish); Massachusetts high school guidance counseling certification; proficiency in Banner and Access software.

COMPENSATION:  Salary Range: $50,785 - $60,000 (Grade 5), plus a comprehensive State benefits package. 

STARTING DATE:  November, 2009
