Job Description:
The Learning Specialist/Disability Services reports to the Director of Office for Students with Disabilities and Deaf Services and works collaboratively with the staff to foster access, success and retention of students with disabilities. DUTIES: - Facilitate access of students with disabilities to programs, services and facilities at the College.
- Assess the learning strengths and weaknesses of individual students; develop individualized plans detailing educational accommodations needed both within and outside the classroom; assist new and continuing students with educational planning and scheduling.
- Consult with faculty and other college professionals to develop and implement educational accommodations and other services needed for student success.
- Collaborate with community agencies and schools to perform outreach, exchange information about services and obtain learning aids appropriate to students needs.
- Instruct students in the use of educational equipment/assistive technology which will support their academic success; collaborate with faculty to include assistive technology in educational accommodations.
- Refer students to appropriate academic, tutorial and personal support as needed.
- Maintain student records and other documentation according to procedures established by Office for Students with Disabilities and Deaf Services.
- Submit periodic statistical and narrative reports as requested.
- Participate in student/faculty/staff development to promote sensitivity to the needs of individuals with disabilities and to expand the skills/awareness needed to respond to these needs.
- Serve as college student advisor.
- Perform college service; attend departmental, division and College-wide meetings and professional development opportunities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Master's degree with three years experience and/or training that includes college level disability services, disability assessment, American's with Disability Act (ADA) compliance or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience working with individuals with disabilities; ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff and student body. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience working with multiple disabilities, assistive technology, and higher education work experience; proficiency in American Sign Language or Spanish. COMPENSATION: $22.65 an hour, non-benefited STARTING DATE: December 15, 2009 HOURS: 18.5 hours per week. FUNDING SOURCE: Perkins Grant
